Some fires roar loud enough for kingdoms to hear. Others are so small and so still that the dark forgets to put them out.

I. The unfed ember

A shadow cannot be cast without light. Yet, what casts the shadow when the sun has long since bled out?

Most people look up at the sky when they want saving. The patient ones look at the ash instead, and wait to see which ember refuses to go cold. It takes no air and asks for no wood, and it makes no sound at all. You were told fire needs air to live. This one only needs to be watched.

Something old has been keeping an eye on it the whole time, something that knows the blade comes down the moment it blinks. People call it Night Gaze.

II. The fall

You know the feeling of the ground giving way, of dropping into a dark so deep that even gravity seems to lose track of you. By rights your bones should have broken, and your mind should have gone with them. So why are you still standing?

The stones didn't go easy on you, and your spine wasn't strong enough on its own. When you hit the bottom, an eye opened in the dark. It didn't reach out a hand. It tilted things, just slightly, so the fall hurt you instead of finishing you.

You called it luck, and later you called it strength. It was a move, made in the dark by a player you didn't know was sitting at your table.

III. The guard with no armor

Shields break and swords rust, and anyone who shouts that they'll save you is mostly painting a target on themselves. The armor that works is the kind you never know you're wearing, a watcher standing behind the blade who says nothing and pushes the steel an inch to one side.

You still bleed, because blood is what it costs to keep the heart going. But you don't end, and every time the dark gets ready to swallow you, the scale tips by about the weight of a feather. It leaves you a sliver of hope, and hope is the most dangerous thing anyone can be left with.

IV. The riddle on the back

Look at the print. You'll see a fire and an eye, and your mind will want to treat them as two different things. Is it a flame that watches, or an eye that burns? If you have to ask, you've missed it. It's the watcher in the ash, and it doesn't stop the night. It stares at the night until the night looks away first.

V. The ledger

You've probably wondered why your page never turned, even when the ink ran out, and you'd like to call it resilience. What happened is that every time the dark opened its mouth, something made a move too small for anyone important to notice, and it was enough to keep you on the board. You've been walking around thinking you survived on your own. You didn't. The eye was open the whole time.

VI. The debt

Cloth tears and fades. What's on your back is a riddle about a fire that wouldn't die and an eye that wouldn't close, and wearing it is a way of nodding to something you'll never see.

The game gets played in the shadows, and the shadows have eyes.

Night Gaze and the all-seeing eye

The all-seeing eye, also called the Eye of Providence, is an eye drawn inside a triangle or surrounded by rays of light. It stands for a power that watches over people, and it's printed on the back of the US one-dollar bill as part of the Great Seal. Much older is the Eye of Horus from ancient Egypt, which people wore for protection.

Night Gaze puts the eye inside a flame instead. It's the same idea of a watcher, except this one can't be put out, and it keeps watching after everything else has burned down.

What does an eye tattoo mean?

An eye tattoo usually means protection, or a reminder that something is watching your back. Some people get one for the all-seeing eye and some for the Eye of Horus. Night Gaze carries that same meaning, printed on the back of a tee instead of inked on skin.

The T-shirt

Night Gaze is an oversized T-shirt in 240 GSM, 100% cotton, in Onyx Black. The puff-printed back carries the fire and the eye.
