You might think it's just ink on cotton, but there's a man in this design, and his story runs through every line of it. Read it once and you'll see Facade differently. You might see the mirror differently too.

The Wheel

He was the kind of person who gave. He carried other people's weight for years, long after he should have put it down, and the people around him took his time and his trust and handed back teeth marks.

The chain wheel on the back is that life. Each link is something he lost, and each turn is another year of being used and still smiling, still saying yes when someone asked for more. He believed that if he was good enough, someone would eventually notice. People did notice him. They just didn't care.

The Thorns

The Thorns, a detail from the Facade graphic on the YTHRAL Facade T-shirt

When the last thread finally snapped, he didn't scream. He went silent, and a good man going silent is about the most dangerous thing there is.

For the first time he saw how things actually work, who gets rewarded and who gets crushed, and how little any of it has to do with who deserves what. The spikes in the art grew out of that moment, one through the shoulder and one through the chest, right where the soft part of him used to be. He didn't flinch when they came through. He smiled afterwards, but there was nothing warm left in it.

The Demon

The Demon, a detail from the Facade graphic on the YTHRAL Facade T-shirt

Look at the figure crouched at the bottom of the print, the one with the wings. That's what lives in him now, in the place where his kindness rotted away, and it talks to him in a voice older than guilt:

"I can show you everything. Give you everything. Just put your hands in the blood."

He did, and he liked it more than he expected to. He liked the way rooms changed when he walked into them, and the way people who had ignored him for years started paying attention. Whatever was left of the boy who gave everything away is buried under the spikes now, and something else is growing over the grave.

The Suit

The Suit, a detail from the Facade graphic on the YTHRAL Facade T-shirt

There's an old joke nobody laughs at, and it's printed right there on the back:

"The world fears monsters until they wear a suit."

He finally understood it. Kindness had never been worth anything to the people he gave it to. It was a wound he kept showing to people who only knew how to make it deeper. Fear was different. Everybody understood fear, so he learned how to use it.

The same hands that used to help people now open the doors that were once shut in his face. The people who looked straight through him can't stop looking now, and the world that broke him has started to bow. He isn't a better man for any of this. He's just a man they finally understand.

The Truth

Some nights, usually around 3 AM, he reaches back for the person he used to be. It feels like reaching for someone sinking in black water, close enough that his fingertips nearly touch, and every time he's too late.

He looks down at his hands. They're stained, and he knows they'll stay that way.

"My hands were clean until I touched the truth."

Then the sun comes up, he puts the mask back on, and nobody can tell the difference.

So that's what you're looking at when you see the ink on the fabric. Maybe the story did nothing for you. Or maybe something in you flinched, because you've been somewhere inside it, or you're there now.

I'm closing the book here, but stories like this one don't really end. They just pick up new names, new men with clean hands walking into a world that won't let them stay clean. It's a strange habit people have, breaking their best ones and then wondering why only the worst are left.

Written from a place you can't reach, by something you should hope you never meet.

Facade is a villain origin story

A villain origin story is the part of a story that shows how someone became the bad guy. It usually starts with a good person and the thing that broke them, which is why people find these stories easier to understand than they'd like to admit.

Facade is one of those. A kind man gets used for years, sees how little his kindness was ever worth to anyone, and learns that being feared gets him further than being good. The suit he puts on at the end is the facade, the calm face he shows the world so nobody sees what's underneath.

The T-shirt

Facade was the first YTHRAL story. The four marks on the back are the Wheel, the Thorns, the Demon and the Suit, printed with the lines "The world fears monsters until they wear a suit" and "My hands were clean until I touched the truth." It's an oversized T-shirt in 240 GSM, 100% cotton, in Optic White, Lavender Haze or Bone Beige.
