Search for brands like Rick Owens and you get the same few names every time. Most lists split into two camps: the dark avant-garde, and oversized basics in neutral colors. This guide covers both, and what most lists leave out.

The dark avant-garde

Rick Owens is the reference point for dark fashion. The clothes are draped and mostly black, and his DRKSHDW line brought that look closer to streetwear.

Yohji Yamamoto and Ann Demeulemeester came before him. Both made oversized, mostly black clothes decades ago, and they're still the names people point to.

Oversized basics

Fear of God, Represent and Amiri took streetwear upmarket. They're known for heavy fabrics and long, oversized proportions, usually in neutral colors with small logos.

The fit and fabric are excellent. What you don't get is much of a story, since the point is to stay quiet. See our list of brands like Represent.

What most lists leave out

Between quiet basics and goth costume, there isn't much. Most gothic streetwear goes the other way, with skull prints and symbols worn like Halloween.
